First Rock Fellowship :: Our Beliefs about Giving

Giving is about so much more than money. Biblical stewardship is being a faithful care taker of what we have been given. We are called to be good stewards of the environment, material possessions, our finances, talents and skills (1 Cor. 4:7), time and opportunities (Eph. 5:15-16), the bearing and raising of our children (Eph. 6:4), and spiritual gifts and ministries (1 Cor. 4:1-2;Eph. 3:2;1 Pet. 4:10). God gives us many things in this life and desires that we use them for his Glory and the spreading of His kingdom. Some of our resources should also be used to support ourselves and our families (1 Thess. 4:11-12; 2 Thess. 3:6,12)

In the Old Testament God taught us to bring a tenth of all that we make to his house (Lev. 27:30-32) He requires that it be the first fruits or off the top not what we have left over if any. Even in Malachi 3:6-12 God speaks of bringing the whole tithe and offerings to his house so that we are not found guilty of robbing God. God has always seen the first 10% of what we receive as being His therefore when we do not give it we are robbing Him of what is His. We practice this corporately as a church. Ten percent of all that comes in to First Rock goes out to missions. Some feel the New Testament doesn’t teach tithing but rather simply giving generously and with a cheerful heart which is true. However Jesus does tell us in Matthew 5:17 that He has not come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; rather He has come to fulfill them. Giving in whatever fashion be it time, talents, or money should always be done with a cheerful and worshipful heart because that is what it is worship to God.
